So I've begun an experiment, based on a very opinionated blog I posted on Facebook a while ago. I'm learning guitar without taking lessons. I'll let you know how it goes. Here's the old post:
Music is not about right and wrong. It's about Fun and Expression.
That's why I can't believe what I'm hearing. My sister is taking guitar lessons, and right now she won't practice because she can't find her lesson book. I mean wtf? So I was like "Just make some noise!" I mean, you have to come up with something, right? But she's like "No, I have to practice for my lesson."
PRACTICE???
Since when did music become something boring to be repeated over and over and over again until you hate it? Where's the expression? Where's the love?
Music lessons should never be anything more than teaching someone how an instrument or a style of music basically works. When a kid gets a basic direction he'll just take it all the way because he loves it! You don't have to beat it into him.
Plus, it makes kids scared of screwing up! Like, "omg no, I can't do that because it won't sound good." So what? I'm sure you don't play everything perfectly when there's music in front of your face either.
Leave Kudos,
Chris
Granted, I understand that it takes a lot more time playing to become amazing than I'm going to spend playing, but what level of expression can I attain with the time I have? I'll let you know!
